The Unspoken Standards That Shape Team Performance and Success.

Coaches Corner

This material is included in the Scribbles newsletter as part of NU Breed's ongoing commitment to supporting our coaches' growth and making them feel valued and recognized for their dedication. By curating content like this, we aim to foster continuous development, spark innovative coaching strategies, and ultimately help our coaches thrive in guiding the next generation of athletes.

DAY 1 – The Standard You Walk Past

Every team has standards, some stated explicitly and others enforced or ignored in practice.

The reality is clear: athletes don’t rise to what you say matters; they rise to what you consistently correct. When drills begin late or communication breaks down, these actions quickly become the norm.  Over time, these moments build habits that shape the culture.

Youth and high school athletes test boundaries to seek clarity. Clear standards create safety, and consistent enforcement builds trust. When players know the expectations apply to everyone, their confidence grows.

Great coaches understand that leadership is found in the details, reflected in how transitions are managed, mistakes are addressed, and effort is recognized. These small moments are powerful and contribute to championship habits.

Volleyball Application: Start practice with urgency. Demand eye contact during instructions, halt drills when effort dips, and praise athletes who hustle to huddles and communicate early.

Coach’s Takeaway: You coach what you tolerate every day.

Reflection: What behavior are you allowing that doesn’t align with the standard you want?

You coach what you tolerate every day.
You coach what you tolerate every day.
