What Is God Doing In This Mess?
My God thoughts on what is God doing in the mess of 2020?
We have been bombarded with images of protest, violence, anger, death, business closures, and pandemic. It's been a steady diet of these images that make life overwhelming.
As a country, we are more divided than ever. We have an "us" and "them" mentality. We choose to focus on our differences rather than what unites us.
Conflict after conflict. Crisis after crisis. Mandate after mandate. Press stop; I want off this planet.
For centuries, decades, years, and months we have witnessed the worst of humanity. How much evidence do we need that we cannot fix ourselves? We desperately needed help. We needed a Messiah.
We celebrated the birth of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, a week ago. He chose to step into the mess of humanity to show us how to live, how to love, and who we could become. Who we must become.
People of faith ask, "what is God doing in this mess?" What's He doing in my fear, my pain, my frustration?
The writer of Ephesians tells us what God is doing in this mess.
"His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility." Eph. 2:15-16
The writer tells us the God is intent on creating a new humanity by bringing people together. God is creating a new people from those who were once divided to build a better future for us all.
This new humanity is possible by the birth and then the Messiah's brutal death on a cross. God moved in the worst moment of human history to deliver His best work.
So what is God doing in this mess?
He is stripping away the facade that we are okay as humans-that we don't need God. What we see in these deflating images is a reflection of the human heart. We required the Messiah to change the core of the human condition.
God uses the conflict, crisis, pandemic as the material to create a new community, a community that refused to be defined by the current events.
I am grateful that God has brought NU Breed people together to create better people to create a better future. What is God doing in the worst of times? He is calling out the best in us.
I'm thankful that these challenging moments didn't define us. My prayer for us in 2021 is that who we are will be more powerful than any moment we face.
We are NU Breed!
