Las Vegas Classic Update 2/24/21
February 24, 2021 Dear Club Directors, Officials, Coaches, Athletes, and Families,
As COVID-19 continues to impact our daily lives, there are strides toward a return to “normal” life. With efforts being made by many people and vaccines, there seems to be a trend of decreased hospitalizations and the spread of the virus. As businesses begin to reopen, all of us are discovering that the requirements or protocols vary between states, counties, and even cities. Trying to navigate through all of the requests for our Las Vegas events has truly been a roller-coaster ride.
As stated previously, the SCVA, KC Sports Housing, and MGM Properties have submitted proposals to Nevada Governor Sisolak. Unfortunately, the Governor has denied our proposed request for the Las Vegas Classic, Red Rock Raves, and Junior Boys Invitational. During the months of March and April, any convention taking place in the state of Nevada will have a maximum attendance of 1000. On May 1st, however the oversight of conventions, the requirements to operate a convention, and any protocols will be turned over to the local authorities, which for us, would be the City of Las Vegas. With the support of the City of Las Vegas and MGM Properties, the SCVA has rescheduled the following events as successful negotiations with Mayor Goodman are already underway:
1. Red Rock Rave 1, which will host Girls 17, 16, and 15 and under divisions, will be hosted on May 15th, 16th, and 17th at Mandalay Bay Convention Center. The last day to award a bid to USAV GJNC is May 30th.
2. Red Rock Rave 2, which will host Girls 14s, 13, 12, and 11 and under divisions will be hosted on May 21st, 22nd, and 23rd at Mandalay Bay Convention Center. The last day to award a bid to USAV GJNC is May 30th.
3. Junior Boys Invitational, which will host Boys 18, 17, 16, 15, 14, and 12 and under divisions will be hosted May 21st, 22nd, and 23rd at Mandalay Bay Convention Center. The last day to award a bid to BJNC is June 6th.
4. Las Vegas Classic, which will host Girls 18, 17, 16, and 15 and under divisions will be hosted June 4th, 5th, and 6th at Mandalay Bay Convention Center. This event will be a “showcase” event at which NCAA coaches (hopefully all levels) will be able to attend. At this time, NCAA extended the dead period for Division 1 through May 31st.
The SCVA understands the inconvenience of the date changes, and will work with all teams at dropping and refunding teams. KC Sports Housing will cancel all current room reservations, and refunds will take approximately 7 to 10 days. KC Sports Housing will also contact clubs to assist in rebooking. As a result of the rescheduled events, the SCVA will reopen online registration for the Las Vegas Classic, Red Rock Rave 2, and the Junior Boys Invitational. Should room become available at the Red Rock Rave 1, the SCVA will reopen online registration for that event as well.
What is now our most challenging issue is the girls 18 and under divisions, that were originally scheduled to compete at the Red Rock Rave 1. Per USA Volleyball, the last day to award bids for the USA Girls 18s National Championship is April 4th. Thus, the SCVA has resubmitted a new proposal to host the Girls 18Open, 18USA, and 18American divisions on March 27th, 28th, and 29th as originally scheduled. The new proposal includes plans to follow the 1000 person attendance, by using multiple MGM Properties in the Las Vegas area. If this is accepted, then the SCVA would notify which division would be hosted at which location, so that teams could book accommodations at that hotel, to avoid commuting issues. The SCVA is also in discussions to provide live streaming of all courts at all events to our families and coaches. This negotiation with the state is in its very beginning stages, and modifications and/or new restrictions may be put in place. As we have done so far, the SCVA will continue to keep everyone up to date with all of the information that we have.
The SCVA appreciates all of the individuals and businesses that have continued to support and believe in our efforts as we try, and try, to successfully host our events again. We know that many of you continue to ride this roller-coaster with us, and it is very much appreciated.
Together we will return to teaching, coaching, playing, and watching our sport.
Thank you for your patience and understanding,
The SCVA Staff Stay Safe. Stay Healthy.
