Be Your Hero!

The COVID-19 virus effects on our health, the economy, as well as the disruption of our lives, are unprecedented. This pandemic is the cause of uncertainty that stressed many left them feeling overwhelmed-life, is spinning out of control.
My purpose in writing this is to tell you that you have the power to control your responses to life. We may not be able to control events, but we can develop coping mechanisms that find possibilities and opportunities within the unknown.
Researcher Nathan Furr has studied the innovators, CEOs, and Nobel Prize winners to understand how they learned to navigate the unknown. Also included in the study were paramedics, surfers, gamblers, and start-up investors.
He discovered that they had some innate qualities to help deal with the unknown, but most of their capacity is learned. The studies revealed that those who developed this "uncertainty capacity" were more creative, more successful, and equipped to identify possibilities in times of uncertainty.
One coping mechanism common to this group was the ability to frame events that they leverage to become successful. Framing challenges is a crucial component that each of us must practice.
Frame it as a learning opportunity. Some of the coping techniques are to ask, "what can I learn from this?" "What is my mission in this?" "Now that this has happened, what am I going to do?" "What is my next step?"
Frame it as a competitive game. We become resilient at dealing with frustrating moments. We win some, and we lose some. Have the mindset we can lose today, but we can win tomorrow.
Frame it around gratitude. Be thankful that you have so much. Recognize that you are blessed.
Frame it around the randomness of life. Life happens while we make other plans. Recognize that events are neutral but will have the power to give them meaning.
The most powerful is the hero frame. Everyone loves heroes. See yourself as the hero in the current story. Every story we enjoy is about a hero that endure obstacles. Think about movies like Aquaman, Star Wars, and the Avengers. The obstacles are what made them heroes.
Now is the time to practice these techniques as a bundle or the one you identify with the best. Who knows but that you may have been born for a time such as this! Be your HERO!
